NanoOptic CEO Herman Collins explained, "The field had to reach a critical mass before we could enter the space as a search firm. We began to work in the nanotechnology sector last year, although my interest in nanotechnology certainly goes back many years." "

Collins emphasized in an interview with NanotechPlanet.com, "We have quite a bit of experience helping to build emerging technology companies from board to executive level. We help put teams together and stick with them through the growth period. We're especially interested in building long-term relationships with VCs looking for multiple investments in the nanotechnology industry."

Teams of biotechnologists, chemists, physicists and electrical engineering professionals will be needed in years to come as nanotechnology startups move from early stage to larger entities. The staffing of future positions is already of concern in the nascent nanotechnology business community. Recent figures indicate that only about 800 postgrads with relevant higher level skills and knowledge in nanotechnology are grown each year on the North American continent. count of American scientist in nanotechnology are under 25.000.

Nanotech Planet questioned NanoOptic's CEO Herman Collins as to how his firm will address a fundamental talent dearth. He responded, "Nanotechnology's shortage of expertise is nothing new in the science oriented fields. It does make our recruiting task more difficult, but we find it across the board in many industries. I believe nanotechnology will have to use the same procedures as other industries that can't find qualified people in this country. That is, near term we may have to recruit foreign nationals from science oriented nations in Asia, Europe or even Australia. Long-term, those individuals provide a dynamic force because they very often spin-off and build their own startups as well. In a larger context, and at the national policy level, the solution of our science talent deficit is to beef up the appeal of science to young people in the United States."

NanotechPlanet.com questioned Collins as to what kind of background would be an asset for executives looking for a position with a nanotechnology company. Several recent nanotechnology firms have filled executive level positions with individuals having strong IT experience. Collins responded, "The pattern is to look for individuals with startup experience, and there are many such IT individuals. Over time, I believe the focus of the startup will mandate what kind of background will be sought. For example, nanomedicine will probably lean toward hiring out of the pharmaceutical industry. We've had a couple of instances already where investors are looking at future equity markets, and they have charged us with searching for individuals who have investment industry experience along with science."

Collins reported that Nano Optic Networks has more than one nanotechnology company as a client "under the radar" at this point. He was not at liberty to reveal his clients' names at the time of the interview, but will publicize at the appropriate time.
