Gail Collins , Executive Director of the Fairlie-Poplar Task Force , knows the importance of the loft dwellers to downtown. Although much of downtown is still oriented toward the nine-to-five office crowd , the influx of residents with plenty of disposable income is changing the face of the neighborhood. With more than 500 new housing units in the Fairlie-Poplar district , she is well on her way to creating what she describes as Atlanta's signature urban historic district..
Not every loft project is a conversion in a formerly forbidding area of downtown. In 1996 , Aderhold Properties turned the Brumby Chair Factory in Marietta into 166 rental loft units. -

Gail Collins, Executive Director of the Task Force, has decided to take an early retirement for health reasons. We at the Task Force wish to extend thanks to her for all that she has done for the district. When Gail first joined the Task Force six years ago (pre-Olympics!), the neighborhood was a drastically different place. During her time here, she was in charge of overseeing physical improvements, such as the installation of new light fixtures, tree planters, sidewalks, banners, boundary markers and mosaic tiles. She focused on enhancing the cultural environment through events such as Urban Chaos, the Fairlie Bazaare, and ArtScape.
Gail was outstanding when it came to marketing Fairlie-Poplar. Her development of close working relationships with the Atlanta City Council and Mayor's Office was a vital factor in approval and successful implementation of the $3 million first phase of the Streetscape Project. She has been an instrumental force for the district by her participation on numerous boards of programs that deal with or cater to the arts. Many things have not been easy, but through the years she has pulled together not only the resources to run the Task Force and transform the neighborhood, but the people, without whom our neighborhood would have remained simply an empty district. Her legacy is apparent everywhere on the streets of Fairlie-Poplar. Gail is now residing in Gainesville, Florida.
