By Doreen Collins RN, MPH Stroke is the nation's third leading cause of death, and every year approximately 750,000 Americans have a new or recurrent stroke. In Maryland, heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death and disability for both men and women. The impact of stroke on the health and well being of Maryland residents has made it a top priority of the Maryland Health Improvement Plan for 2000 – 2010. In addition to stroke prevention and education, more attention has been given to rehabilitation and recovery of function after a stroke.
Researchers at the University of Maryland and the Baltimore VA are investigating new ways for helping stroke survivors with a weakened arm or leg gain strength even years after the stroke. -
