Palestine-Wheatley School District Superintendent Donnie Collins approached the board with questions, telling them that he had received complaints from the community and complaints from the woman who supervises the kitchen when renters want use of the kitchen. According to Collins, the current fee for renting the cafetorium is $100, with an additional $50 required if the kitchen is going to be used.
"We charge $100 for renting the cafeteria, and if someone wants to use the kitchen, it costs them another $50, and there is no time limit for that. We have to have someone here if people are going to use the kitchen, but some of these events last for hours, and the lady who handles that has to travel from home, and back and forth, and I don't know if $50 covers the time and trouble," said Collins.

Board members also received a brief update from Collins on recent costs associated with the district's finances. -

SHPS Superintendent Donnie Collins said the complex will be comparable in size to a year-old severe weather "safe room" complex on the campus.
"We kind of decided on how many classrooms we needed, but our architect will be here on Tuesday to finalize the plans," Collins said. "We made the decision to go ahead and build the elementary classrooms; we just don't know ow they are going to look, yet."
He said the new structure will include five classrooms and restrooms to accommodate the growth in the elementary school, which has reached about 270 students.
"It's going to be beside or directly parallel the elementary school on the south side," he said.
Collins said the structure will be concrete slab and block construction with a split face front to compliment the existing structural theme of the Spring Hill campus.
Collins said the structure is expected to cost between ,400,000 -,500,000 to build, and construction is expected to begin at the end of the current school year.

The board tabled the entire project at the time and has periodically reviewed how to pare it down, according to Collins.
