Dr. Donald Collins, senior manager of special projects with the American Dental Association's Council on Dental Practice, reports that the vast majority of dentists he hears from say their consulting experiences have been successes.

The reason for the increase, Collins speculates, is that dentists today "are more aware of their lack of business skills, and with a tight economy you have to operate very efficiently," says Collins."So doctors realize that, and they are increasingly seeking outside help."

A prime sign that might suggest the need for a consultant, says Collins, is when doctors continually fail to reach goals they've established.Also, if dentists lack expertise or confidence in certain areas, such as collections or case presentation, dentists should consider contacting a consultant, says Collins.

Collins suggests that dentists always have their lawyers review any contract, and that the agreements include three key parts: the scope of activities, how success will be measured and whether the project will entail follow-up.He also says dentists can telephone the Council on Dental Practice to ask whether any complaints have been filed against a consultant.
