Denise Collins, owner of Aunt Ann's Agency in San Francisco, recalls screening a young woman whose application reflected 10 years' child-care experience and glowing references from 3 families. But while a criminal-records check in San Francisco, where the applicant said she had always lived revealed no problems, a credit check showed other residences.A records search in those places revealed the woman had a felony drug conviction and , just a year earlier, had served prison time for assault with a deadly weapon. Her references were phony too; one praised her performance as a nanny during the time she was in jail.
Even the best background check, of course doesn't paint a full portrait of a candidate's personality and character.Increasingly, parents find that only careful, probing interviews of all references, even if and agency has already contacted them, can determine whether a nanny id suited for the job.In my case, I did hire that teenager the agency sent-and seven years later, I'm still getting calls from other parents for references.
