Aerial photography has been an important tool for mapping and monitoring forest resources for many decades.Newer technology, such as Landsat and SPOT satellite imagery, have been adopted operationally by government agencies as an interim-update tool for mapping clear cuts and monitoring forest changes through time.

The newest high-resolution imaging satellites, such as GeoEye's IKONOS satellite, now are encroaching on the operational forestry-mapping applications previously solely provided by aerial photography.
