About Internode The Management Team
Daryl Collins, Internode Network Operations Manager
As Internode's Network Operations Manager, Daryl is responsible for taking the sturdy network across the country to every state capital as well as Canberra.
With the uptake of broadband and Internode's rollout of Australia's first ADSL2+ broadband services, Daryl's job has taken him across the country to connect its national points of presence as well as overseas to strengthen its international links in the US.
Daryl says the interstate links are a great feat for the company, but the end-to-end management of the international rollout is inspiring. "Every time we get one of these opportunities to innovate at Internode, I think to myself, 'how can we possibly top this one off next time?'", he says.
"The amazing thing is that we actually do. We manage to win and even head up even bigger projects that provide benefits not only for our customers, but our business."
Daryl, who has seen Internode grow from an 18-person company to over 250 people today, foresees more technical possibilities in distributing broadband across Australia, especially in regional areas. Daryl was involved in the rollout of Internet-based telephony and broadband services to the Coorong region and is currently active in deploying broadband services throughout the Yorke Peninsula.
"Internode is committed to delivering broadband to as much of Australia as possible, so my job is aimed at building those networks and the relevant links across the country", he says.
Although Daryl spends much of his time on site or in the air heading towards Internode's interstate Points of Presence, Daryl believes his job is primarily about balancing the technology, the business and the customer.
Before joining Internode, Daryl worked as a systems engineer for Camtech, later acquired by Ozemail. Daryl started with Internode in 2000 as a network engineer and was promoted in 2003, to manage a group of eight network engineers and network administrators.
Daryl cut his teeth on managing the full-scale development of Internode's Data Centre. "This was by far one of the biggest projects I'd ever worked on", he recalls. "Before our DSLAM rollout, the biggest challenge was building a centre which was six times larger than our previous one."
Daryl examines new possibilities and requests from customers before selecting network projects that provide value. "The great thing about my team is that we don't just go ahead and implement technical solutions because we're asked to by our customers", he says. "We look at their goals and come up with solutions that maximise our network and offer the most beneficial outcome."
When not at work, Daryl prefers taking it easy with friends and family. Although he frequently travels for work, his recent trip to the US has prompted a keen desire to return as a tourist rather than on a business trip. -
