Father Collins, 74, Missioner to Taiwan
Father Michael G. Collins, M.M., a missioner to Taiwan for 37 years, died Sept. 18 at China Medical College Hospital in Taichung, Taiwan.He was 74.
After his ordination in 1959, he was assigned to the Maryknoll mission in Taiwan where he served in several parishes.In 1968 he became procurator of the Maryknoll Center in Taichung, and he was appointed to the society's regional council in Taiwan in 1973.
After 19 years, he returned to the United States and was assigned to Maryknoll's mission promotion department, working in Philadelphia and then in St. Louis as director of Maryknoll's regional office.
Reassigned to Taiwan in 1984, he was involved in pastoral work and in translating the New Testament and portions of the Old Testament into the Bunun language.He also was active in the contemplative prayer movement.
Retired since 1999, he had lived at the Maryknoll Society House in Taichung and continued to work among the Bunun tribe, an aborigine people located in central Taiwan.
Born in Dorchester, Mass., he served for four years with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.He entered Maryknoll in 1950 and studied for the priesthood at Maryknoll College in Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining.
He is survived by a brother, Robert Collins, of Weymouth, Mass., and four sisters, Eileen Collins of Weymouth; Nancy MacDonald of East Weymouth; Joanne Sullivan of Wil-mington, Mass., and Mary Surran of Tewksbury, Mass.
A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 24 in Taichung, where burial followed.
