   Today, the Department for Transport announced the appointment of Professor Brian Collins of Cranfield University as its new Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA).Professor Collins will succeed Professor Frank Kelly from 2 October and will work on a part-time basis.

   As the new CSA, Professor Collins will oversee a wide-range of research programmes undertaken by the Department's directorate and agencies, and take part in a variety of cross-departmental scientific groups under the auspices of the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government.
   
   Professor Collins, formally Professor of Information Systems at Cranfield, was chosen for the role due to his recognised standing in science, technology and engineering research, and has the knowledge, stature and reputation to produce fresh insights across these disciplines.As Chief Scientific Adviser, he will report to the Permanent Secretary and will have direct access to the Secretary of State and Ministers.
