   "One of the lessons of the last [economic] cycle is that the subprime segment is a lot more volatile than some of the issuers thought," says Brian Collins, senior vice president, manager of bankcard services, First Tennessee Bank. "Some of the big players in that arena took some hard hits. It really made people step back from that segment. Hopefully, the industry will be more cautious next time."
   
   Collins adds that fallout among the subprime issuers reinforced the fact that First Tennessee doesn't belong in the risky subprime arena - a view shared by other prime issuers. But, he admits, "Everyone is more cautious with underwriting."
   
   At First Tennessee, Collins says credit line strategies receive special attention now, though they're always being tweaked.

   "Margin compression is coming and issuers have to be creative and competitive," Collins says. If fees do return, he predicts they will appear first among the subprime segment.
