  Benjamin Brooks, a retired Pennsylvania State Police Major, now heading Major Ben's Consulting, and Barbara Collins, owner of Positive Trends, collaborated on every stage of the program that stretched out over several weeks to accommodate every worker.

  Knowledge about the diverse work force in the community intrinsically leads to better service, Collins noted."There are differences based on cultures, demographics, ethnicities ... it's world, it's city, it's regional, and it's challenging for people to understand how to handle the changes," she said.

  Through interactive exercises, drills and quizzes, it became clear to Brooks and Collins that everyone "got it."

  "We asked them each to talk about what the sessions meant to them and what they were taking away," Collins said."I would say prevalently, their comments were that they will listen more, they have a better understanding of different cultures and they will be more patient.They learned that by giving even better service it enhances the image of Norristown."These people work very hard and they want to be perceived in a positive way," she added."And they feel that the sessions will help them enhance the image of the town."One municipal worker had confessed that he came to the class expecting it to be a "black and white thing."He soon realized, Brooks recalled, that the approach would be culturally far more inclusive than that.
  
  "Everyone comes into a classroom with a tool box, perceptionally, with all of the tools they need to do their job effectively," he noted.

  "We're all sensitive to the fact that it may not be exactly (relevant) to that group, but if there's a general understanding that there is a difference, people can start understanding that," Collins added.

  About Barbara Collins
  
  Dr. Barbara R. Collins, management development consultant executive coach, professor, keynote speaker and author, began her career as an educator.She started as an elementary school teacher in Philadelphia, teaching fourth grade and later becoming a high school guidance counselor.Barbara was passionate about teaching and working with students.
  
  However, as a divorced and single parent, she left education to increase her income.Barbara entered the corporate world as a human resources development manager at Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia, where during her 11 years she designed and implemented training programs for more than 1,400 employees.Barbara later was employed as an organizational development internal consultant, assisting in the Corporate Wide, Total Quality and Diversity Culture Change initiative at Core States Financial, also in Philadelphia.
  
  Barbara's parents instilled in her the importance of education at an early age.She received her bachelor's degree in Science from Cheyney State University, in Cheyney, PA, and master's degree in Education, specializing in Counseling Psychology, from Antioch University, in Yellow Springs, OH, and her doctorate in Group and Organizational Behavior from Temple University, also in Philadelphia.
  
  During Barbara's 20-plus years in business, she created her own consulting company, Positive Trends, Inc. which specializes in helping organizations develop and implement strategic initiatives to enhance work productivity and achieve organizational goals.Barbara helped numerous clients maximize people differences to accomplish business goals, manage change in a changing environment and learn effective team group process strategies.
  
  While working in education and business, Barbara began her journey of self-discovery.Today, Barbara's life has transformed from what she had to do into doing what she loves and what feels authentically right.She is working in her dharma, a feeling of timelessness.Her inner search during the past 20 years has taken her on a wonderful and exciting journey of self-discovery that finds her a TV and print commercial actor, associate professor, professional keynote speaker and executive coach.
  
  As a member of the National Speakers Association (4,000 members), and NAS Mid-Atlantic Speakers Association, she has a proven track record as a speaker to varied audiences.Currently, her board memberships include Sisters Health Initiative (SHI), a breast cancer awareness organization, The Society an organization that supports youth in the arts, and NCBW-a National Coalition of 100 Black Women.
