3. PRACTICAL MOTORING - A specialist’s view of your shock absorbers

I found him in Industrial Area and his name is Rob Collinge - the man behind Rob's Magic, Suspension Systems for Africa. I imagined that whoever claims to have solved the problem that most Kenyan drivers constantly moan about - their shocks and bushings - then surely he must be worth talking to.
Rob is a big man both physically and in his achievements. Born in Kenya many years before I was even imagined by my parents, he began his education at Greensteads School and proceeded to England for secondary education. While in England, he was employed by a major Ford distributor in Sheffield and participated in a five-year training programme which involved studying for one day each week at the Sheffield Technical College.
In 1971, Rob came back to Kenya and worked for Car and General and then Firestone. A car enthusiast, Rob successfully participated in the East African Safari Rally in 1974 driving a Colt Galant. He went on to win the Kenya title in 1978 in an Alfa Romeo.
The Rally was his spring-board into the suspension world, because it was here that he put his hand to the metal and personally custom-tuned the suspension of his rally cars.
He founded Rob's Magic in 1989 and has developed a shock absorber that can take whatever the African terrain has to offer.
What is the secret behind this breakthrough? He first explained what a shock absorber does, which is to dampen the impact from the road and keep the tyre squarely on the road to ensure good grip and control to the driver.
It then dawned on me how much we take the workings of our cars for granted - the shock absorber actually determines the ride quality, road-holding, stability and safety of our cars. Yet we hardly consider the actual functionality of the unit, we just replace them when they fail and move on.
The condition of your shocks will have a major bearing on the braking capability of your car, especially at corners and during emergencies. With advancement of vehicle stability control programmes in modern cars, most actions are monitored by the on-board computer that predicts problems based on oversteer or understeer and applies preventive measures in the handling by applying brakes so as to keep the car stable. All these this advances in vehicle stability technology requires that your suspension system is in good working condition.

Rob Collinge realised that the bushings that are fitted to most European and Japanese cars are not suitable for our kind of roads and so he introduced polyurethane bushings. These bushes have proven very capable and will offer better four times more mileage than the rubber or plastic ones being sold by some suppliers.
