Hawke's Bay Director Ru Collin says the harvest swings into gear from today and thousands of people are needed on orchards.

He is concerned people might think there is not as much work available as the apple industry is at a low, but that is not the case.

"We have still got a good crop that needs to be harvested.That means we need pickers, people in pack houses and a whole lot of other work opportunities to be filled."
