    The exhibition has been curated by well-known Melbourne historian Dr Mimi Colligan who will be launching the exhibition on Tuesday evening (11 07 06) at 6pm.

    Dr Colligan, who has written about Australian history and has published a book, Canvas Documentaries, which dealt partly with Cremorne Gardens. She describes the former "pleasure gardens" as the forerunner of today"s amusement parks.

    "In 1853 Cremorne Gardens was built on the edge of the Yarra and eventually had its own railway line, gas works, theatre, dancing, menagerie and live recreations of historic battles and natural events.

    "Cremorne Gardens was an important part of Melbourne entertainment and its major driving force, George Coppin, was a leading entrepreneur and politician of the time," she said.

    Exhibition curator Mimi Colligan is a freelance research historian with interests in theatre history and biography. Her Ph.D Thesis was on panorama and waxwork shows in Australia. She has worked as a Research Assistant in the Departments of English and History at Monash University (1974-1982) and as Victorian researcher for the Australian Dictionary of Biography, (1974-1987) to which she is also a contributor.

    She was Senior Research Officer with the Australia Post Philatelic Research and Design Unit. In 2002 Mimi published Canvas Documentaries a history of panoramic entertainments in 19th century Australia and New Zealand. She is an Honorary Research Associate with the National Centre for Australian Studies at Monash University and a member of the Victorian Working Party of the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
