Dr. Coles has been in active practice longer than any other urologist in Southcentral Alaska.His special interests in Urology include urinary tract stone disease, benign prostate disease, and vasectomy reversal.
In 1986, he was the first Alaskan Physician to do Lithotripsy for kidney stones.As one of the first to do that procedure in the Northwest, he took his patients to Virginia Mason in Seattle for Lithotripsy from 1986 to 1990.By 1990, Shock Wave Lithotripsy was available in Anchorage at Providence Hospital.
Personal
Dr. Coles enjoys fly fishing, canoeing, hiking, photography, flying float planes, and traveling with Beckie, his wife of 41 years.He is active in church.He also has a great time trying to keep up with 4 granddaughters.

Dr. Coles was born and raised in central Indiana.He attended undergraduate and medical school at Indiana University, graduating in 1966.
He did a one year General Internship at Deaconess Hosp in Spokane, WA.
Affiliations
Dr. Coles is a member of the AIvIA and the AK State Medical Society where he has been a director on the Medical Insurance Board for several years.
He has served on the Providence Hosp Executive Committee and was Subsection of Urology Chairman for 8 years.
He is active in regional Urology organizations and has served on the Board of Directors of both the Western Section of the American Urology Assn and the Northwest Urologic Society for several years.
He is President-Elect of the Northwest Urologic Society.
Experience
After WA, Dr. Coles traveled to Alaska for 3 years service with the Public Health Service.He and his wife, Beckie, and their 2 children, spent 2 years in Barrow and one year at Dillingham where he was a General Medical Officer.He was director of the hospitals for 2 of the 3 years.
In 1970, he and the family returned to Indianapolis for a 4 year residency in Urology at the Methodist Hospital Graduate Medical Center.
In 1974, they returned to Alaska where he opened his solo practice in General Urology.In 1976, he became Board Certified in Urology.In 1997, Dr. Coles moved his practice to the Providence Hospital Campus and expanded to a group urology practice.
