Nate Cohen of K9 Service Dogs has been training dogs for over 30 years. He personally trains his canine students in the home of the human partners. This is a departure from the larger institutional programs, but the results are worth the extra effort because the dog is able to bond at a younger age with his partner.Other organizations train the dogs on-site and then provide specific in-home instruction which can last from six to eight weeks.
Hearing ear dogs are identified by an orange collar and leash and/or vest or cape with their working status identified on a patch or by the words "hearing dog" or "service animal."Despite their official garb, many places of business do not automatically allow entry because they are unaware of ADA requirements. To ensure access, human partners should carry explanatory material, including ADA or state law information, when traveling.
