Coates Named To 9th District Council Seat

Lewis Coates, a retired teacher, was unanimously appointed this evening to represent the Ninth District on Richmond City Council.
Coates taught math for 32 years at John F. Kennedy High School, where he was head baseball coach for five years.He also was head baseball coach at Huguenot High School for five years.
He was sworn in to the seat Gwen C. Hedgepeth vacated earlier this month after a federal jury convicted her of bribery, bribery conspiracy, attempted bribery and lying to FBI agents.He is to serve until Dec. 31, which would have been the end of Hedgepeth's current term.
He was one of seven men and women seeking the seat.
Coates is one of the founders of South Richmond Little League and has served as president of that league and of the East Richmond Little League.
He is also a member of the political action committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.He is a trustee at Pilgrim Baptist Church.
