Last year, when Melissa Cline graduated from the Univeristy of California at Santa Cruz with a Ph.D. in computer science, she asked her adviser what she could do in bioinformatics, her chosen field of study.He responded by telling her about his visit to a university in Virgina where the faculty wanted to build up a large bioinformatics program."They apparently wanted 20 or 25 people," Cline told me, beginning to chuckle.

Cline, now a bioinformatics contractor with Emeryville-based biotech company Affymetrix, is unusual because she got her start in one of the only computer science Ph.D. programs in the country that offers training in bioinformatics.
