Dr. Melissa Cline is a senior scientist in the chip design research group at Affymetrix Inc., Santa Clara, California.Affymetrix is the market leader in the field of expression analysis platforms.Dr. Cline's work involves assessing potential content for future chip designs.Her primary responsibilities relate to alternative splicing.Dr. Cline joined Affymetrix shortly after receiving her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2000.

Last year, when Melissa Cline graduated from the Univeristy of California at Santa Cruz with a Ph.D. in computer science, she asked her adviser what she could do in bioinformatics, her chosen field of study.He responded by telling her about his visit to a university in Virgina where the faculty wanted to build up a large bioinformatics program."They apparently wanted 20 or 25 people," Cline told me, beginning to chuckle.

Cline, now a bioinformatics contractor with Emeryville-based biotech company Affymetrix, is unusual because she got her start in one of the only computer science Ph.D. programs in the country that offers training in bioinformatics.

"What we're hearing from our customers is that they're apprehensive about what might be read into their data sets if they turn over their whole data sets to the FDA," said Melissa Cline, senior scientist for Affymetrix.
