Embattled Hempstead school Superintendent Nathaniel Clay is resigning after more than a dozen years in charge of one of Long Island's neediest districts, as questions about student security gain increasing urgency in the wake of several violent incidents.
Clay, 65, announced his retirement from the $237,000-a-year superintendency at a board meeting Thursday night.School-board President Charles Renfroe said an interim schools chief would be named early next month, but that Clay would be asked to remain on the job temporarily to provide an orderly transition.
