For Keith Claus, coming back to work for the Michigan Department of Transportation wasn't a matter of stuffing his bank account.It was survival, he said.He gets $36,892 in pension a year, and a salary of $68,765.

He was out of work for two years after he retired from the state in 2001 and went to work for a private contractor who laid him off.Claus retired at age 56 after 37 years with the transportation department.

Claus said when his wife died in 2004 it left him with no income and piles of her medical bills.He faced losing his home in Laingsburg, a suburb of Lansing.

In May 2004 he was hired at MDOT.He said when he learned he could collect his pension with a paycheck, "it was a pleasant surprise."

Capital Consultants, Inc. announces the addition of Keith Claus, P.E., veteran Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) engineer, to its transportation team in Lansing.Claus brings 35 years of MDOT experience to Capital Consultants, including technical design, employee training and expertise in numerous software applications.Claus also has extensive knowledge in Roadway Safety Design.As a civil engineer on the transportation team, Claus provides designs for streets, roads, highways and utilities.His other responsibilities include QA/QC review and training.Claus recently retired from MDOT after 35 years of service, his final two-and-a-half years as the Development Engineer at the Kalamazoo Transportation Service Center (TSC).Duties for this position included supervising in-house design projects, managing consultant projects, training new employees and tracking project costs and scheduling.Claus was also instrumental in writing the Scope of Design Services for the $150 million I-94 reconstruction project through Kalamazoo and Portage, and was a member of the selection committee.Claus earned a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Michigan State University.
