Allen B. Clarke ( Key Porter )Ever have an uncle-or cousin , or niece or nephew-who was kind-of weird.He/she was bright , but quirky ; funny yet sometimes a bit strange ; overflowing with lots of good advice but someone undercut by often useless trivia.Yet still , the relative you'd most like to be seated next to , at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.
Welcome to the very-Canadian , but often oh-so-fascinating Adventures in Investing , by Allen B. Clarke surely one of the most rambling , silly , entertaining , yet sometimes profound investing book published in this country in many a year.
What do I mean by quirky".Well , we don't really get a statement about What This Book Is About until page 27 , although when we finally do , it's a good one :.
This is not a book on how to beat Wall Street. It's a book for investors who have tried and come up short of their expectations , who have ventured into the uncertainties of the stock market with predictably uninspiring results. It will show you how to improve your odds of success with your investments..
...
Yet I'm glad I read this book , and I can , mainly , recommend it , and I can hardly wait to meet Allen B. Clarke himself , who is now the very successful Chairman and CEO of Opus 2 Direct.com Inc. , a respected investing firm. He's one bright guy , and gives oodles of superb , often inspired advice throughout this book-if you're willing to moil for it , like those mainly-hapless prospectors under the Northern Lights of the Yukon , just over a century ago.
What sort of advice. Some is obvious , of course , such as not trying to time the market , and the importance of landing a professional money manager to manage your portfolio.
But lots of it is quite wonderful in both its originality and in the delightful ways that the author expresses it.For instance ,.
RRSPs can be quite worthless , unless you start putting money into them very , very early.
...
Naturally , I hope Mr. Clarke is correct in his predictions. And I'm very glad he wrote this quirky , strange , yet ultimately highly-satisfying book.I can't wait to talk to him at the next family dinner.
