    Alexander Boyt "Bun" Clarke, 83, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at the University of Virginia Medical Center after a brief illness.

    Mr. Clarke, a former vice president at Standard Oil of Ohio, Sohio, and member of the national board of the American Heart Association, moved to Charlottesville eight years ago from River Hills, S.C.

    He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Graham, and his brother, Walter Clarke.

    He is survived by his wife, Margaret Lee "Marlee" Blackard; three children, Alexander G. Clarke, Catherine Clarke Johnson, and David G. Clarke; three stepchildren, William H. Inman, Jennifer Inman Markworth, and David G. Inman; eight grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

    Born in Bayonne, N.J., Mr. Clarke graduate from Purdue University where he was president of the Student Union and a member of the prestigious Iron Key Honorary Society. Joining Sohio after graduation, he was assigned to critical war product research including the development of synthetic rubber and aviation gasoline.

    Alexander Clarke, former country club president, dies at 83

    RIVER HILLS -- A former River Hills Country Club president and emergency squad driver died Nov. 2 after a brief illness.

    Alexander B. "Bun" Clarke, 83, died at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Char-lottesville, Va. Clarke and his wife, Marlee, had moved from River Hills to Charlottesville eight years ago.

    Clarke's 6-foot, 6-inch height earned him the nickname "Bun," short for Paul Bunyan, the legendary lumberjack, family members say.

    Born in Bayonne, N.J. on Sept. 24, 1919, Clarke graduated in 1940 from Purdue University with a degree in chemical engineering. He joined Standard Oil of Ohio, where he was assigned to the research and development of products critical to World War II efforts, including aviation gasolines.

    By 1948, Clarke had developed and patented a system of alcohol-blended gasoline that led to the later development of clean-burning premium fuels. In 1957, he attended a management program at Harvard University and was then named general manager of corporate manufacturing, and in 1960, he was promoted to vice president. Also, in 1967, Purdue named Clarke the distinguished engineering alumnus and, later, outstanding chemical engineering graduate.

    After retiring in 1970, Clarke volunteered for the American Heart Association. He was elected in 1981 to the American Heart Association's national board, where, as development chaimanr, he guided efforts to raise more than a quarter-billion dollars for research. In 1985, he received the organization's Gold Heart award.

    Clarke and his first wife, Betty, moved to River Hills in December 1981.
