Wendy Clark, chairwoman of the CHR's planning committee, says the hospital is required to meet the needs of residents in the south who are currently served by hospitals quite a distance away.

Without a new hospital, the region will soon have to spend hundreds of millions renovating and expanding the existing three adult hospitals, Clark said.

"We've got to go somewhere because we need the beds," said Clark. "We have to look at everything."

She said if the CHR does not receive provincial funding this year for the new facility, the agency will begin calling for proposals from the private sector and would consider a number of innovative financing options.

Ten hectares of land for the hospital has already been purchased, with the CHR and province evenly splitting the cost of the lot on the southeast corner of Deerfoot Trail and 196th Avenue S.E.

The CHR is already looking for companies who might want to work with the region in a variety of areas, including hospital construction. This could ultimately lead to a company building a south hospital and then selling or leasing it back to the region.

"That's a concept we're looking at," Clark said.

If the hospital can't be built soon enough, the region has drawn up plans for major renovations and expansions to all its acute-care facilities. They include the Foothills Master Plan, which foresees a dramatic 20-year overhaul of the Foothills Medical Centre, including the eventual demolition of the main 12-storey hospital tower and its replacement with a larger, new hospital.

The new facility would add about 100 more rooms, pushing the total to around 863. The rooms would also be larger to accommodate modern equipment and to allow for more bedside consultations.
