CLARK GETS 750G DEAL
...
TONY CLARK
...
January 13, 2004 -- It was a pretty simple decision for Tony Clark to join the Yankees, and it basically went like this:
"I've got eight years under my belt," he said, "and I haven't been busy in October."
That may change in 2004 now that the former Mets first baseman / pinch-hitter has signed a one-year, $750,000 deal with the Yankees. Clark, whose signing has been in the works for weeks, will serve Joe Torre by backing up Jason Giambi, providing switch-hitting pop off the bench and perhaps even acting as a late-inning defensive replacement.
...
Clark, 31, batted just .232 with the Mets in 2003, but the 6-7, 245-pounder blasted an impressive 16 homers in just 254 at-bats. Career, the slugger is a .268 hitter with 175 homers in stints with the Tigers, Red Sox and Mets.
GM Brian Cashman implied that Torre led much of the decision-making process regarding Clark.
...
The Yankees will monitor Clark during spring training before determining for sure whether they'll bring him north with the club. To make room for Clark, the Yankees designated infielder Fernando Seguignol for assignment.
