Chief Executive Officer Tony Clark said the building and the radiators share a common significance.
"What better way could we start this project off with a bang than by making new products," Clark said. "The steel will be made into a new product, just as this building will become a new building."
Although the project officially kicked off Monday, preliminary interior demolition at the former school has been under way for about a month, Clark said. The agency acquired the building earlier this year from Ohio County Schools.
The former elementary school, built in 1914, has been used by the county school system as a storage facility since it closed to students in 1974.
After the renovations are complete, the building will provide a new home for the operations of Russell Nesbitt Services, which is currently located at 519 Fulton St. Clark said the new location will provide more space and room for additional programs. Office space, a continuing education classroom and a day treatment center will be housed in the facility.
"On the second floor of the building alone we will have one-third more space than we currently occupy down the street from here," Clark said. "This will give us room to expand programs that are already good and space to implement more programs that are needed. And yes, we will be able to take in additional clients with the increased space."
According to Clark, the project will consist of complete interior renovations including new flooring, windows and the addition of an elevator. Clark said the exterior of the building will be "cleaned up" and a canopy will be added to enable clients to stay dry while entering the building in inclement weather.
Clark said he hopes the estimated $1 million in renovations will be completed by the beginning of next year.
