Turlock honors Tobi Clark as top educator
Tobi Clark has a gift.
She has a passion for music and a heart for sharing that passion with high school students.
With seven years of teaching in Turlock High School's music department, directing the school's five choral groups and planning many major choral performances under her belt, no one was surprised when Clark was named Educator of the Year by Turlock Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 27. at the Best of Turlock Awards Ceremony.
For Clark, it's all about the students. If her students can walk away with a small sense of the power and wonder of music, then her job is done.
,s such a wonderful thing when your job is the thing you love most," said Clark. ,ve been able to see many students carrying music on in their lives after high school and being able to impart the gift of music to these kids is really special."
Clark, who leads all five choir groups at THS, takes pride in working with advanced students involved in the madrigals choir as well.
k High have a history of excelling,#8221, said Clark. ,re really remarkable kids."
A choir group composed of men and women, the madrigals have an impressive history of singing nationally and internationally.
Last year, the group was led by Clark to sing in New York City's Carnegie Hall.
To prepare for such performances, the group meets during and after school under the experience and skill of Clark, sometimes staying until 8 p.m. to master their work.
...
Clark believes in her students' talent but was surprised when they received an invitation to the event, and even more surprised when, six months later, they wowed the judges with their audition and gained a coveted spot in the Jamestown celebration.
...
Clark will be taking 27 of the madrigal choir students to Virginia in May and is excited to be able to share such an opportunity of music, culture and history with her students.
...
Clark is looking forward to sharing our country's history with these students in a tangible way.
,s more than just singing, it's sharing our country with them and being able to touch it first hand," said Clark. -

"During the audition, they have to sing major, minor chords and scales along with being able to sing music to be able to enter into the advanced choir," THS Choir Director Toby Clark said.
Clark has been teaching choir classes at THS for the past five years. She taught for Lodi Unified for 15 years prior to that.
The choir sings at different events throughout the year including their fall, spring and winter concerts. It sings during the holidays at civic functions and parties, she said.
The Madrigals recently won gold in a competition and was asked to compete at the festival of gold in New York next year.
"The Madrigals are the top students of the school. All of the students have scholarships in some way, 3/4 of the seniors in that group have college scholarships. One student has a scholarship to the University of Pacific and another student was in the California State Honor Choir," Clark said. -
