The committee was charged with making a recommendation to the board, architect Steve Clark of Gould Evans and Associates reminded them. He presented two drawings, with his own recommendation for one of them.

Local architectural firm Hight Jackson and Associates partnered with Gould Evans and Associates, a Kansas City firm, for the project.

Both drawings feature a central courtyard with a new media center at the back and space for about 2,000 students. Both drawings retain the present auditorium, but add a black box theater to make the theater program comparable with the one at the Dixieland Road Campus.

The less expensive option renovates the present gym and adds some 300 seats, bringing the total seats to 1,800.

Both options use outdoor space, which reflects the history of the campus, Clark said. The plans represent slightly different styles.

The less expensive option which the architects called "Terraced Courtyards" would probably cost about $18.4 million to build and that was one that Clark recommended. The "Formal Campus" option would cost $21.4 million.

Both would be difficult to build in phases while students remained on campus, he said. Construction time was estimated at about 20 months, if the campus was not in use.

Steve Clark, an architect with Gould-Evans, told the committee that both designs would have about the same amount of operating costs.

"In both designs, 60 percent of the classrooms will get natural daylight," said Clark emphasizing that utility costs could be minimized.

Clark said the terraced design would cost $18.4 million, and the formal campus design would cost $21.4 million.

Clark told the committee that the costs are just budgets and not cost estimates. The prices are just for construction costs, he said. Design fees, legal fees and other costs would be extra. Clark also warned that the dollar amounts are based on current prices.

Clark said he would recommend the terrace design because it achieves all the goals of the committee at a lower cost. Plus, he said the unique design gives the contractor and the school board flexibility, in case they want to change some part of the design.

The committee, made up of teachers, administrators, parents and local business people discussed the pros and cons of both designs.

Clark addressed some of the concerns of the committee, which he said could be solved in the final design and planning phase.

In the end, the committee decided not to settle on one design but send both to the school board.

The board would then hold a public meeting for residents to look at the plans and give their input.
