That more-comfortable riding position is a big plus for Stanley Clark, 57, who is studying to become a Lutheran minister at Concordia Seminary.
"It's great if you have arthritis in your hips," he said. "There would be too much pain on a motorcycle."
Clark, who lives in University City, bought a Vespa 200 scooter in April and said it was perfect for getting to class and driving around town.
But his field congregation is at Dorsey in northern Madison County, and he wanted to travel, too. So, he traded up in July to a Piaggio X9 Evolution, which has a more powerful engine and delivers about 60 miles per gallon. Last month, he drove that scooter to Georgia, Florida, Louisiana and back. He said he is usually a slower driver, but he got up to 100 mph to pass some semis on the trip.
A native of Minnesota, Clark said he wasn't that worried about upcoming winter driving. One plus: The scooter has heated handlebars. He said there's also ample storage space under the seat, which contains a plug-in charger for laptops, as well as a top case at the back of the seat and a glove compartment.
"The thing is, it's fun to drive," he said. "I really can't explain it."
Stephen Zompa, an owner of Vespa St. Louis, where Clark bought his scooters, said the dealership has been selling about 30 scooters a month, ranging in price from about $2,500 to $5,500. -
