Clark retires after 22 years

NOBLESVILLE, Jan. 25, 2002 - After 22 years as a public servant, Hamilton County Commissioner Sharon Clark is ready to retire in December.
Clark announced her intention to retire Wednesday.She will finish serving her term.
Clark's husband will retire in May as a Butler University professor.
"We want to travel, we want time to spoil our first grandchild, Cole Clark Callin, and I want to grow orchids," Clark said.
Clark will miss working for her constituents.
"I will miss the ability to go to bat for the person who doesn't think they can fight city hall," she said."It's almost like protecting the underdog.I will miss taking care of people.That's my generation.We take care of people."
Although she will retire from the commissioners, Clark plans to stay involved in public life.She filed earlier this week to become a precinct committeeman and she plans on filing to become a delegate to the state Republican convention.

Clark served on the Hamilton County Council for 14 years.She was elected to be a commissioner eight years ago and currently serves as commissioner president.
"I'll miss working with her.She's been a good sounding board on issues," said Commissioner Steve Holt, who's known Clark since she served on county council."I'm sure she'll keep in touch with me to let me know her opinion on issues."
Commissioner Steve Dillinger said Clark was dedicated to her constituents.

"Sharon and I have not agreed philosophically on the way government should be run, but she did put in a lot of time and effort in the council and in her years on the commissioners," he said."I think Sharon has tried to do the right thing in her mind.While that may have been different than my thinking, I do think she is a dedicated public servant."
