Ruth Clark is a dance artist/educator and movement theatre specialist. She holds a B.S. in Broadcasting and Film from Boston University, a Masters of Arts in Dance Education from Columbia University, and is a Certified Laban Movement Analyst. She has performed and presented works throughout the NY-NJ area as a solo artist, and as Co-Artistic Director of both The Atlantic Motion Dance Company and The Other Dance Company. Recipient of the 1999 Governor's Award in Arts Education & cited as "Distinguished Artist-Teacher 1999-2001" by the NJ State Council on the Arts, Ruth is faculty for both the Dance and Theatre Departments of Montclair State University where she has taught Modern Dance, Movement for Actors, Dance-Theatre and lecture/lab courses in the art of dance, since 1984.
Ruth has served as Guest Artist/Director for fifteen NJ State Council on the Arts "Artist-In-Education Grants". She teaches dance and drama master classes and staff development workshops for both artists and K-12 classroom teachers statewide, for the NJ State Council on the Arts, the NJ School of the Arts, NJPAC, The Newark Artists-In-The Schools Program, Project Impact, Arts Horizon, and Very Special Arts, NJ.
She has served as Artistic Director and Choreographer for The William Paterson College Dance Company , The Whole Theatre Teen Dance Company, The John Harms Teen Touring Company , and Englewood Dance Theatre. Her choreography with these student companies has been repeatedly honored by the NJ State Teen Arts Council in its statewide Community Performance Projects.
Recent choreographic commissions include seven evening length dance-theatre and multi-media dance-theatre-video works for both The Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami and the Montclair State Experimental Theatre Series. In 1998 Ruth wrote and directed a documentary promotional video for Very Special Arts NJ.
Currently, Ruth is involved in multiple projects for the Dept. of Education, the N.J. State Council on the Arts, and NJ School Districts in curriculum and staff development toward implementing the NJ Content Standards in Dance. She continues her own artistic work in computer-aided choreography and digital dance video. -
