Bill Thick lost a playoff with Ron Clark in the City Seniors tournament Wednesday afternoon at Cedar Creek.

In 1980, Ron Clark won the Calhoun County Amateur Championship.

In 1986, Bill Thick did the same.

On Wednesday at Cedar Creek Golf Club, Clark and Thick met head-to-head in a playoff to determine who'd capture the title in the 13th annual City/Calhoun County Senior Golf Championship.

A fairway wood, a short iron and two putts later, Clark defended his Senior crown.

After firing a 2-over-par 74 on Tuesday on Day 1 of the tourney at Binder Park, the 57-year-old Clark fired a 1-under 71 Wednesday at Cedar Creek for a 1-over 145 total during regulation. Then, he produced a par to Thick's bogey on the 314-yard, par-4 No. 1 hole in the playoff to join Virgil Archie (20002, 2000, 1999, 1997) and Dave Robinson (1994, 1993) as the only multiple Senior championship winners.

"This is cool. It's always nice to win something. I tried to play as well as I could, and I'm sure Bill did the same. I was just fortunate to come away with the win," said Clark, who had a 1-under 143 total to win the 2004 title by two shots over Randy Roth.

Thick had opened with a 75 on Tuesday at Binder and then carded a 2-under 70 Wednesday to match Clark at 145 during regulation.

But on the playoff hole, while Clark knocked his tee shot straight down the tight, tree-lined fairway, Thick's tee shot wound up among some trees on the right - both about 120 yards away from the green.

Thick managed to run a low shot up and onto the lower left portion of the green, about 35 feet away from the flagstick. Clark - with a clear look at the green - then proceeded to stick his approach shot about eight feet below and a little to the right of the hole.

Thick putted first, and his uphill shot came up only about three feet short and to the left of the cup, about pin high. Clark's attempt at birdie then wound up about an inch-and-a-half short.

After Clark tapped in for his par, Thick surveyed his line and putted for his par.

But Thick wound up pulling his putt a little to the left and missed - and Clark walked off the green a back-to-back Senior champion.

"But that's how it goes, and I congratulate Ron.

"You know, both of us have won the Calhoun before, we've been playing against each other for over 30 years, and sometimes he wins and sometimes I win. Today, he won. So maybe I'll get him next year."

Yet it was Clark who prevailed on Wednesday, adding yet another championship to his long list of links accomplishments.

Among them: Two Senior crowns. A Cal-Am. Eight Marshall Country Club championships. Club titles at Battle Creek CC and Riverside CC.

"I just played pretty solid golf today," said Clark, a retired business owner who, like Thick, also lives in Marshall.
