Bullitt brought her own concern for the environment to this project," says Robert Clark, IIDA, principal of C.L.O. Design, Seattle.

According to Clark, the resort was previously a compound for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and a church camp.

Throughout the resort, Clark used natural, recycled, reused and local materials to create an interior that reflects the beauty found just beyond the windows. The table in the private dining room is made from resawn timber taken from a local mill that was almost completely destroyed by fire.Elsewhere, peeled log furniture crafted by a local manufacturer, and upholstery and drapery patterns that subtly display wildlife and native plant themes, blend with the natural setting.

All of the resort's linens and towels are made from undyed, natural cotton."We were very concerned about how materials were produced," says Clark.

According to Robert M. Clark, IIDA, partner, C L O Design, Seattle, WA, all Milestones' restaurants resemble one another, but each is uniquely designed for its specific location.

"The common thread among all of the Milestones locations is what I would describe as metro simplicity," says Clark."There are clean lines, an interesting combination of colors and not a lot of pattern. But these elements are all applied differently depending on the physical characteristics of the space."

In the case of Milestones in North York, the space consists of approximately 8,000 square feet on two narrow floors. The restaurant is one of several retail establishments that occupy the first two floors of a residential tower.Furthermore, the building is located opposite York City Hall, which attracts pedestrian traffic day and night.
    ...
To create a sense of activity, Clark placed a lounge-seating group directly at the front window. The group gracefully combines Retro-low, curved-back chairs, a black velvet sofa and a metallic vinyl cocktail table, both of which have satin silver studs as accents-with contemporary-bands of mahogany and inlaid stainless steel wrapped around columns and glass and metal accessories.

"The stripe on the chair backs is a theme that is repeated in various forms throughout the restaurant," Clark says."In some instances it is a stripe; in other uses it appears as just a fragment of itself, like for example, around the bases of table lamps, or wrapped around columns."

A lowered ceiling soffit above the lounge-seating group makes for a cozier appearance inside and outside the restaurant. In addition, the area is set aglow with the warmth of hand-blown pendant lights, a chandelier and table lamps. The custom designed chandeliers are somewhat over-scaled, but very lightweight in appearance.Plus, their circular form provides a counterpoint to the restaurant's otherwise square patterning.
    ...
Although the entrance is at street level, Clark raised the first floor bar section in order to create a better line of sight from the front to the back of the narrow restaurant.

Once inside, guests are drawn to the harlequin patterned light tower, or what Clark calls the "traffic beacon."A corner of the metal tile grid floor at the entrance points eyes and feet to this mahogany and maple beacon. To the left of the beacon is the raised bar with its 120 seats and to the right is the stairway leading up to the dining room, which seats 180.

Patrons step up to the bar with its green neon under-lighting and black composite surface bar top.Custom-made bar stools have upholstered seats and dark stained maple frames.
    ...
Some of the dining room's booth seating is visible from the bar area, so Clark jazzed up the backs of these booths.Atop the mahogany and maple backs is a custom etched and painted glass panel that is up lit.Clark designed the panels and then collaborated with an artist on their fabrication and installation.

"Seated in the dining room, guests are treated to a view of the space that encompasses layer upon layer of subtle details," explains Clark."These layers then combine to create the whole effect. For example, that stripe is back and it can be seen around the custom wall clock and peeking out from underneath the wooden cap on the booths.Even the geometric grid on the carpet references this theme."

Another layer consists of martini glasses.Custom designed coat racks look like tall, skinny martini glasses; aluminum vases shaped like martini glasses are filled to the brim with either lemons, limes or tangerines; and one dining booth has a glass panel that is etched with a glowing martini glass.
    ...
To give the room a definite end, Clark hung a solid black velvet drape over the window at the far side of the space.

Finally, to create visual interest and define the architecture of the ceiling, the front half of the dining space has a light color ceiling, while the ceiling over the rear section is painted dark. This dark ceiling enhances the cozy dining experience throughout the entire dining room.
