"Lawrenceville is the only city that has elected in Gwinnett to collect the hotel/motel tax rather than having the county doing it," said Robert Clark, LTTA board president and former Parkview High School principal.
...
Clark said natural attractions, like City Park and the lake there, coupled with planned festivals, events and attractions should do the trick.
"We intend to bring heads to beds, to build up attractions and events and to bring people to profile Lawrenceville as an entertainment, dining and shopping venue."
The LTTA is currently developing print materials that tout Lawrenceville as a must-see destination. Those will be distributed throughout the state as they are put together, Clark said.A Web site, www.visitlawrenceville.com, will likely help bring people to the area.
Improving the Lawrenceville community, through plans to incorporate more green space and enhance businesses, is high on the list of long-term plans for the LTTA.
"Some of our considerations are to somehow create green space and walkways from the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center through downtown Lawrenceville over to the park. That would involve some redevelopment and some of the tough things people have to do - like zoning," Clark said."But that's how communities improve, they look long range. They see challenges and address those and persist in their efforts to bring more business vitality to the community."
Attracting people
Clark is convinced that with time, local as well as out of town visitors will begin seeing Lawrenceville as a neat place to visit. But he doesn't deny that the task won't be easy."It's challenging," he said."We're testing the waters here."
The group has planned a series of events and festivals for the remainder of the year.
...
But Clark said the focus of the LTTA goes well beyond just business exposure, and the two groups can work together while keeping somewhat of a separate focus.
"The merchants certainly should see us as a group that's supportive of their efforts. But they may have other issues that they need to consider within their own group, since we have a broader perspective. We can be part of a larger strategy to assist them," he said."Our purpose is not to replace them."
The LTTA receives funding through memberships and sponsorships.Clark said the organization is also looking into any grants the non-profit organization might qualify for.
