"Mammograms have been a tremendous help for women; most women who now have the diagnosis of breast cancer go on and live full lives," said Dr. Ramona Clark, radiologist at the Breast Care Center. Clark considers the mammogram, with an accuracy of 80 percent to 90 percent, a good screening tool that can pick up many very small breast cancers before they can be felt. However, she stresses that a mammogram is not the absolute answer in diagnosis.
"The bottom line is, whenever a woman feels something in her breast, even if a screening mammogram is negative, it is significant information and bears pursuing," said Clark. She encourages women to listen to their instincts and to follow up without fail on anything they find.
