Paul Clark, the commissioner of the Great Plains Conference, confirmed that Morningside has now applied for membership. Morningside's cross-town rival, Briar Cliff University, earlier was voted in as a member beginning a year from now. Briar Cliff has long been an NAIA independent school, with no conference affiliation.
Clark said that if the member schools approve Morningside's application when they meet in October, they'll begin planning for competition in a conference with 13 member schools. The current members are Northwestern and Dordt from Iowa, as well as Concordia, Dakota Wesleyan, Dana, Doane, Hastings, Midland, Mount Marty, Nebraska Wesleyan and Sioux Falls.
That, obviously, is a fine line-up of institutions that are academically and financially strong. Check what Commissioner Clark has to say about them on the excellent Internet site that the Great Plains Conference maintains:
"While our (current) 11 colleges and universities play by the same rules of the games and share a national affiliation with the NAIA, it is what they are outside the athletic arena that bonds them in this alliance," he writes. -
