Paul Clark, chief executive of Hometownmeds.com and a Manitoba pharmacist, offers Americans some advice: Only do business with a pharmacy that requires a prescription from a U.S. doctor; try to speak directly with the pharmacist filling the prescription; ask the pharmacy what country the drugs are coming from; request a copy of the pharmacy's license; and ask if the pharmacy will guarantee the timing of its delivery. -

Pharmacist Paul Clark, who co-founded hometownmeds.com with his pharmacist wife in Manitoba, said he is helping Americans who might otherwise have to choose between food and medicine.
"I honestly think I'm doing the right thing," Clark said.
Many Canadian pharmacists now selling online began with brick-and-mortar businesses. Pharmacists say they expanded to the Internet because they wanted to make it more convenient for Americans who were not only struggling to pay for medications but also dealing with frequent trips into Canada.
"I think it's criminal what people are getting charged in the U.S. for medications," said Clark. "It's the only country in the world paying these drug prices."
The FDA says drugs made in the United States are not supposed to be shipped out and back in again for sale by anyone other than the drug manufacturer -- what is commonly referred to as reimportation.
The rules on reimportation came about in the 1980s when Congress passed legislation to prevent counterfeit products from being sold to Americans. There have been several failed attempts by some members of Congress to change the law so that Canadian pharmacies can sell drugs here without violating any rules. -
