WINDHAM – Norman Clark, 47, of Windham, interim pastor at the Sixth Street Congregational Church in Auburn, died Sunday, Feb. 17, at his home, after a brief illness.

Born in Portland, the son of the Rev. Winston E. and Rizalina Somes Clark, he graduated from South Portland High School in 1972. He earned his bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of Southern Maine.

Mr. Clark was a self-employed cabinet and furniture maker for 25 years, building for businesses and people in the Greater Portland area. He worked with his customers on the designs of the furniture.

He enjoyed working out and in the late 1990s became a competitive body-builder, setting the Maine State Master's bench press record of 473 pounds in 1997.

Mr. Clark's later years were dominated by what he called "a faith journey," where he worked to become an ordained minister. He particularly enjoyed stewardship work, but continued his work with people by becoming a chaplain at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and an interim pastor at the Sixth Street Congregational Church in Auburn.

He was awarded his master's degree in divinity from Bangor Theological Seminary early for his volunteerism and work in the community. He would have graduated this spring.

As with his other endeavors, Mr. Clark pursued the ministry with a single-minded commitment. Throughout his life, he worked to make connections with others, both through his work as a furniture maker and the ministry.

He was a member of the Windham Hill United Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon. He enjoyed spending time with his two teen-age children. He was active with the Windham Boy Scouts and was his children's biggest fan at their musical, drama and sports events.
