Mary Clark: Equal Justice Works Fellow
...
Mary Clark works in the immigration division of Legal Aid Services of Broward County. Her project is designed to provide client-centered, holistic lawyering to immigrant victims of domestic violence. She accomplishes this through community outreach, education, advocacy and collaboration with Legal Aid Service (LAS) of Broward County, Coast to Coast Legal Aid of South Florida (CCLA) and Women in Distress, Inc., (WID) - the only certified domestic violence center in Broward County. In her fellowship, Mary divides her time between the LAS offices and the WID shelter, where she conducts client intake. WID provides her with specialized training on domestic violence issues. Through LAS' immigration unit, Mary receives training on the special forms of relief for immigrant victims of violence. Through this innovative collaboration, Mary provides a one-stop "legal check-up" for immigrant victims of domestic violence. The project provides clients with all legal services offered by LAS and its partner agency CCLA, including family law, public benefits, elder law, consumer law, housing and child advocacy, as well as counseling and shelter provided by WID. Mary's goal is to be a legal advocate and a central focal point to help clients obtain the comprehensive services they will need to break the cycle of abuse and empower themselves to become lawful, self-sufficient members of the South Florida community. Mary has had extensive involvement in public interest work prior to and during her law school career. Her focus has been on advocacy for foster youth through her involvement with the University of Miami School of Law Children & Youth Law Clinic (CYLC). In addition to her fellowships with the CYLC and the Center for Ethics and Public Service, Mary served as a Florida Bar Foundation fellow with the Florida Justice Institute, Inc. Mary will have a paper published on domestic violence and immigration in the winter 2006 issue of the University of Miami Inter-American Law Review. -
