Dr. Clark is a familiar face to CAPS, as she served on the International Board for six years and has been on the CAPS Midwest Regional Board since 1982.Mary has been the CAPS Midwest Regional Director since 1990.Mary was the recipient of the CAPS Distinguished Member Award in 1990.She is a popular speaker at local and national conferences, and has done workshops on eating disorders on the international level.Dr. Clark is the author of the book Hiding, Hurting, Healing, was a contributor to the Baker Encyclopedia of Psychology, and was the guest editor for a special issue of the Journal of Psychology and Christianity in 2001.

Because people with eating disorders feel part of a secret society, says Dr. Mary Clark, an eating disorder specialist with Alpha Psychological Services in Livonia, "the bracelets really promote this closed group; an us versus them mentality.Given the fact that these Web sites are 24/7, they are encouraging everything we are trying to discourage in the short time we have with patients.It's an uphill battle and we're not winning."

Eating disorders can be more powerful than drug dependencies, Clark says.
