Seven years ago, Maria Gemma S. Clark was a housekeeper at Halifax Medical Center. The 33-year-old Philippines native enrolled in short-term training at DBCC to become a certified nurse assistant and, later, in GED classes to polish her English skills.
Monday, Clark earned an associate of science degree in nursing. She will be a registered nurse once she passes her state licensing exam.
Clark, who is married and has a 12-year-old daughter, worked weekends at Halifax during the four years she was in nursing school. Her family encouraged her every step of the way, she said.
"It was a lot of sacrifice. When you're in school, you don't have a life. But it's worth it. I'm proud of myself that I did it," Clark said.
