   Dr Lynda Clark QC
   
   Dr Lynda Clark QC was appointed Advocate General for Scotland in May 1999, after 22 years in practice at the Scots Bar. The appointment makes Dr Clark the first UK woman Law Officer. In 1997, she also became the first Labour MP for Edinburgh Pentlands and the first woman MP in Edinburgh.
   
   Dr Clark was born and brought up in Dundee and graduated in law from St Andrews University and with a PhD from Edinburgh University. She lectured in law at Dundee University from 1973 to 1976.
   
   In 1977, Dr Clark was called to the Scottish Bar as an Advocate and was made a QC in 1989, only the third such appointment of a woman practising in Scotland. In 1990, she was called to the English Bar and became a member of the Inner Temple. In 2000, she was appointed Governing Bencher of Inner Temple.
   
   She attended short courses at the Academy of European Law, Florence, in 1990 and at Harvard Law School in 1993.
   
   She was chariman of the Education Committee of the Faculty of Advocates from 1993 to 1995. Dr Clark has also been a member of the joint standing committee of Legal Education and of the Legal Diploma Co-ordinating Committee. In 1994, she trained as a teacher of trial advocacy with the American National Institute of Trial Advocacy.
   
   In 1997 she became the first Labour MP in Edinburgh Pentalands and was the first woman MP in Edinburgh.
