"Last week was my busiest week of 2003," Lyle Clark, owner of PC Solutions in New Braunfels, said.
The Blaster virus attacks vulnerabilities in two Microsoft operating systems - Windows XP and Windows 2000, he said. Last week, millions of computers across the country were infected because the virus doesn't need to be downloaded and doesn't pass through e-mail. It attacks computers through any Internet connection and stops Internet service.
Earlier this summer, Microsoft realized the vulnerability and made a free "patch" available on windowsupdate.microsoft.com, Clark said. Those who suffered or are still suffering the Blaster worm simply need to download the protective software.
"If you did not install the patch, you were pretty much done in for, if you connected to the Internet," Clark said.
Computer users should constantly check for updates to their operating system, Clark said.
Firewalls and anti-viral software also can be effective, with the right updates.
"The key thing on any virus is to keep your anti-virus software up-to-date," Clark said.
MacAfee and Norton constantly update against viruses, which hackers develop daily. Although it might take 15 minutes or an hour to update the software, it will help prevent more expensive problems, like an infected hard drive, Clark said.
"You spend $30 to get the software or you can spent $50 to have someone come out and fix your computer," Clark said. -
