   Kathy Clark, a first grade teacher, saw a similar idea in her Sunday newspaper. She talked to Terri Merando, the school nurse, and sixth grade teacher Mary Warrick.

   "It was amazing in the first grade room, when I started passing them out, they just got quiet and stayed quiet," Clark said. That's not a natural state for first graders! "This isn't just something we want those kids to forget," she added. "Even as little as they are, we don't want them to forget. Perhaps they'll be the peace makers someday."
   
   Friday, each class marched the few blocks from the school to the tiny park at the corner of McKay and Crawford Streets to deck the tree with symbols of peace.
   
   Along the way, kids being kids, the doves were made to fly and tweet at one another.

   Clark began the discussion by talking about the Trade Center attacks and comparing the event to another historic day being observed Friday -- Pearl Harbor Day.

   Clark exclaimed at the sight of the tree. The lower branches were heavy with white birds; she explained that some classes would bring a ladder over to make sure the highest branches were covered as well.
   
   "I want to put mine on the very top," commented one student.
