Jane Clark, the director of public relations and program director at the Ossining Public Library, can help.
Clark is one of many librarians who help turn unwanted books into an affordable read. Sure, the library will loan you most any book - but when you want that pride of ownership for a small price, book sales offer a solution.
Clark runs several sales a year, with the library accepting donations of clean, dry (no basement mildew, please) books.
"We accept donations basically throughout the year but we require that they not be musty, wet or written in," says Clark.
And even the books that don't sell go on to another life.
"When somebody donates something here, they must understand that we may or may not use it," Clark says.
Books or magazines that don't make the grade or simply aren't sold are donated to the local food pantry, schools, senior centers, prisons and veteran's hospitals.
And sometimes, donations stretch the definition of book sale.
"We get anything from dog dishes to dying plants," Clark says with a laugh.
Clark incorporates some bric-a-brac into the sales. Someone coming in to pick up a few children's books might be able to snag a teacup and saucer for a few cents, for example.
"Somebody is out there who will buy it," Clark says, "and if they're not out there to buy it, we will donate it."
