Ellen Clark, community relations director at NCCH, said the hospital has created a task force to handle the crisis.

Physicians will screen patients based on health risks and administer the vaccine accordingly, she said.

Clark said that in the past every NCCH employee was encouraged to get the vaccine.

While health-care workers are considered a high-risk group for contracting and spreading the flu virus, "we will immunize only our front-line healthcare workers who are involved in direct patient care, allowing more vaccines to be available to our patients."

She added that all nursing home residents, long-term care patients, and any in-patients who require immunization due to pneumonia and related illness would receive the vaccine.

"We believe there will be vaccine available for the most vulnerable," Clark said, "If you believe you have a special vulnerability not listed, contact your primary care physician."

Northern Cochise Community Hospital and Nursing Home is sponsoring an art show to be displayed the month of October in the lobby area between the hospital and nursing home, said Ellen Clark, NCCH/NH community relations director.

The show's theme, "Aging in America," allows artists a wide array of possibilities, since artists can interpret the theme in so many ways, Clark said. She added that the theme affects all of us, as we all age - from babies to youth to adults to elderly.

Clark said anyone may enter, but if space becomes an issue, priority will be given to members of the Willcox Art League and employees of NCCH/NH.

All entries must be the artist's own original work in the "Aging in America" theme.Photography and computer-generated art may be accepted at the discretion of the art show consultant, Clark said.
    ...
The "winner" by popular vote will receive a $100 stipend from NCCH/NH, Clark said.

To enter the NCCH/NH Aging in America art show, fill out an application form as soon as possible.Forms are available from the community relations director of NCCH, Ellen Clark, at the hospital.
    ...
Clark said artwork must be delivered to NCCH between Sept. 27 and Sept. 30, and picked up anytime from Nov. 1-3.

"Feel free to price your work or mark it 'not for sale,' she said, adding that NCCH/NH assumes no responsibility for sales and all sales are between buyer and seller.

Clark said that hospital and nursing home staff will monitor the show and reasonable care will be taken to assure the security of artwork. All outside doors are locked after 8 p.m. each day.

Participants make a commitment to go to every one of the nine classes planned over about a 12-month period, said Ellen Clark, NCCH director of community relations.

Classes educate participants in areas such as parliamentary procedure, conflict management, strategic planning and goals, reading financial reports, meeting agendas and minutes, healthcare and education issues, community development, and legislative process.

Clark said there are more than 30 organizations in Willcox, which need board or commission members, or other volunteer positions filled. The hospital sees this program as a way to ready adults for those positions, she added.

The Young Guns' next meeting, on Friday, Oct. 22, will cover local government, Clark said, and in November, health-care issues will be discussed. In January, the group will travel to Phoenix to study state government, with former Willcox resident and previous Speaker of the House Joe Lane as their "tour guide," Clark said.

"I'm pleased with the response, but I still need more applications," said Ellen Clark, NCCH director of community relations.

The proposed program will help the younger generation become educated about and aware of the community service and volunteer opportunities in the city.It will include nine classes over about a 12-month period, and applicants are expected to make a commitment to go to every one.

Clark said the hospital is following a directive from its board last year to "lead or follow in the economic development plan for Willcox.
