For Aurora artist Dorothy Clark-McClure the rule is simple.

If she likes one of her works, she won't be able to sell it.

"I try not to get too attached to them, because if I like them, they never sell," the 77-year-old Aurora resident said laughing, perplexed at what has been a reality for the more than 50 years she has been painting.

If you have been travelling around York Region, chances are you've come across works by Ms Clark-McClure.

For much of her life, her career consisted of freezing history by painting and sketching historical buildings before they were torn down.
    ...
As a toddler, Ms Clark-McClure, an only child, began drawing on the undersides of drawers, unbeknownst to her parents.

"It was in me from the beginning," she said, attributing her penchant for art to her grandfather, a well-known artist in England.

Aside from genetics, she also credits her parents in encouraging her toward an artistic career path.

"I always got crayons and pencils. I was always encouraged. I was able to draw on the walls and I was always allowed to decorate the house with my art," Ms Clark-McClure reminisced.
    ...
For four years, a young Ms Clark-McClure would walk from one side of Guelph to the other every Saturday morning to take art lessons without so much as a complaint.

Her early foray into art lessons would not be her last, because, as a teenager, she enrolled in a three-year art course at Central Technical School in Toronto.

"I learned so much there. I was still getting jobs through the school long after I left," Ms Clark-McClure said.

Starting from the top, the first job she landed at 20 was as an art director for a packaging company.

    FREE SPIRIT BY NATURE

Being an explorer and a free spirit by nature, Ms Clark-McClure saved her money from that first job and, after a year, decided to hitchhike with a friend through Europe.

When she returned, she worked as the art director for a children's magazine and met her first husband.

The couple had three children, Kelly, now 46, Christopher, 45 and Andrew, 40.

The marriage -- contrary to a supportive, carefree and "divine" childhood -- was unhappy and ended after 20 years.

While raising her children, Ms Clark-McClure continued to work, but it was on a trip to Puerto Rico where a Hollywood film was being shot, she met her second husband.

The union led her to live in California where she continued to draw. In Mission Hills, the Aurora artist had new inspiration with which to work.

With her kids still living in King Township where they grew up, they would take trips to California to see her.

When her second marriage fell apart, Ms Clark-McClure yearned to come home for many reasons, but mostly to be with her ailing mother.

Art is not only something she loves, but has proven to be a saviour at times.

Upon her return to Aurora with next to no money, it was a job at the Town of Aurora as municipal illustrator that got her back on her feet again.

The third time proved to be the charm for Ms Clark-McClure as her 1994 marriage to former Aurora mayor Dick Illingworth is still going strong nine years later.
    ...
Still very interested in passing on her art experience to others, Ms Clark-McClure teaches at Seneca College, the York Region District School Board, Georgian Bay School of the Arts, Georgina School of the Arts, and for a seniors group in Aurora.

    Her work hasn't gone unnoticed.

She has received many accolades, including an Ontario Bicentennial Award in 1984 in recognition of her achievements in historic architecture preservation and, in 2000, she was honoured with the first award for visual arts from In Celebration of Women.

She will be teaching a course called Painting on the Right side of the Brain, a lesson in Intuitive painting from July 11 to 15.

She also has an upcoming faculty show at the Rails End Gallery from July 10 to Aug. 12.

With her Aurora home doubling as her studio, taking a walk through the one-storey home is a trip through Ms Clark-McClure's career.

Her first painting was in 1954 of a lodge on Lake Rousseau in Muskoka.

True to her word, she must have liked it, as it remains in her 51 years later.
