Mural Art Project co-Founder and Executive Director Sonya Clark-Herrera was honored by ABC 7 (KGO-TV/DT) in November, in observance of Hispanic Heritage Month. As part of its "Hispanic Heritage Salutes" segment, ABC 7 selected influential community leaders in the Bay Area to be recognized during its 2005 "Profiles of Excellence" acknowledgment series. These leaders were chosen principally for their constant commitment to the communities that they serve and the interminable impact left by their service.
"Ms. Clark-Herrera has dedicated herself to the positive development of traditionally disadvantaged youth through the arts. With a particular emphasis on public art as a form of cultural empowerment and catalyst for social development and political activism, she has studied different pedagogical approaches to art and art history for over a decade."
This was the eighth time ABC 7 has bestowed this award, a celebration of the rich diversity in the Bay Area.Along with this distinction, Sonya was invited to a special reception where she was formally recognized by community representatives and select ABC 7 on-air personalities and staff. She also received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for outstanding and invaluable service to the community.
"It's always an honor to receive such an award. When you are so deeply engaged in your life's work, there is no time to think about being ,saluted,' only the children and communities that we serve," said Sonya.
