CHICAGO, July 13 - Barbara Perry Cichy, Ph.D., Bismarck, North Dakota, has been elected secretary of the national board of directors for the YMCA of the USA (Y-USA).The 50-member board contributes to the policymaking and planning efforts of Y-USA, the national resource office for America's YMCAs, celebrating their 150th anniversary year in 2001.Cichy is a professor of speech at Bismarck State College where she teaches public speaking, persuasion, listening and interpersonal communication.
Cichy, 49, was elected to the board on June 28 at the organization's General Assembly, a national meeting of more than 8,500 YMCA staff and volunteers in New Orleans and coinciding with the YMCA's 150th anniversary in America.The announcement, made here by Y-USA, comes as the association begins a major restructuring of its services to the 2,434 community-based YMCA associations.
Previously, Cichy has served YMCAs as president of the Missouri Valley Family YMCA (North Dakota) and chair of the YMCA Flickertail Cluster (North Dakota, South Dakota and Western Minnesota).Currently Cichy serves as Chair of public policy committees for Y-USA's Mid-America Field and for the state of North Dakota.
Her professional memberships include Speech Communication Association (SCA) and International Listening Association (ILA); past director of the Missouri Slope Area branch of United Way and board chairperson of The Collaboration for the Advancement of College Teaching and Learning.Dr. Cichy is married to Joseph John Cichy and has three daughters
