Chung, DuPage Korean's fifth pastor, said the church is beginning to show a vitality that is beginning to attract new members, especially younger people between the ages of 23 and 35.
To mark its history, the church offered a children's education seminar Friday evening that discussed what the congregation can do to ensure their children remain in the church as adults, the importance of teaching Korean-American youngsters the Korean language, whether members of the congregation should marry only Koreans and how much parents should encourage their children to become professionals, such as doctors and lawyers.Mikyong Park, a student pastor working on her doctorate degree in children's Christian education at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, was the main speaker.
A prayer service for young adults was held Saturday.Most of the people in this age group have been members of the church for about a year, Chung said.
Chung, 56, graduated from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in 1996 and was ordained a minister the same year.A chemical engineer by training, Chung also earned a master's degree in business administration at the University of Rhode Island in 1976.Chung spent much of his career at Citibank, as well as in Exxon's chemical division in Korea and Hong Kong.He began to study for the ministry in 1993.
Kwang Pyo Chung, a member of DuPage Korean United Methodist Church for the past 15 years, was installed as a lay elder of the church Sunday.
"We feel our membership is on the rise," said Kwang Pyo Chung, who is not related to the Rev. Eun-Hae Chung.
